Let’s Tarot with Joaquin Lopez

“Let’s Tarot” is a two-part, in-person workshop for artists, healers, and creatively inclined folks who feel drawn to learn the art of tarot as a language of image, symbol and creative process. 

Details:

  • Dates: Thursdays, October 8 and 15, 2026
  • Time: 6 pm – 9 pm
  • Location: Portland Queer Healers Collective, 2512 SE 25th Ave, Suite 206, Portland, OR 97202 (ADA Accessible) 
  • Transportation and parking: Street parking and TriMet FX-2-Division line.
  • Materials: Bring a journal, pen or pencil and your tarot cards (any deck is fine). We’ll use the standard Rider-Waite deck for instruction. 
  • Cost: Sliding scale fee of $40 – $195 (No one turned away for lack of funds. Please contact us at workshops@newrooms.org if the fee is a barrier.)

What to expect?

This course is process-oriented and conversational rather than purely instructional. Joaquin will introduce ideas, and participants will explore them together as a group. The intention is that each person leaves with:

  • Practical ways to use the cards in personal life and creative practice.
  • A felt understanding of how tarot can help us support others. 
  • A living sense of what tarot is and is not. (It is not fortune-telling!)

The class will approach the cards as living images—doorways into feeling, imagination, and story. You’ll learn about:

  • The basic architecture of the deck.
  • The meaning of numbers.
  • The elemental quality of the suits.
  • The archetypal flow of the Major Arcana.
  • The Celtic Cross and the Trinity tarot spreads. 

Drawing on more than 25 years of tarot reading, Joaquin will share the system and philosophy he uses in his own practice, and participants will spend time delving into the imagery itself—learning to read visually and intuitively rather than relying only on memorized meanings. 

Participants will:

  • Develop a personal relationship with tarot imagery.
  • Explore archetypes, symbols, and visual storytelling.
  • Practice intuitive and interpretive reading techniques.
  • Use tarot as a tool for creative process and artistic inquiry.

No prior experience with tarot is required! Come with curiosity and leave with new ways of seeing—both your art and yourself.
