SUMMARY:Let’s Tarot with Joaquin Lopez
DESCRIPTION:“Let’s Tarot” is a two-part\, in-person workshop for artists\, healers\, and creatively inclined folks who feel drawn to learn the art of tarot as a language of image\, symbol and creative process.  \nDetails: \n\nDates: Thursdays\, October 8 and 15\, 2026\nTime: 6 pm – 9 pm\nLocation: Portland Queer Healers Collective\, 2512 SE 25th Ave\, Suite 206\, Portland\, OR 97202 (ADA Accessible) \nTransportation and parking: Street parking and TriMet FX-2-Division line.\nMaterials: Bring a journal\, pen or pencil and your tarot cards (any deck is fine). We’ll use the standard Rider-Waite deck for instruction. \nCost: Sliding scale fee of $40 – $195 (No one turned away for lack of funds. Please contact us at workshops@newrooms.org if the fee is a barrier.)\nRegister by signing up here!\n\n  \nWhat to expect?\nThis course is process-oriented and conversational rather than purely instructional. Joaquin will introduce ideas\, and participants will explore them together as a group. The intention is that each person leaves with: \n\nPractical ways to use the cards in personal life and creative practice.\nA felt understanding of how tarot can help us support others. \nA living sense of what tarot is and is not. (It is not fortune-telling!)\n\nThe class will approach the cards as living images—doorways into feeling\, imagination\, and story. You’ll learn about: \n\nThe basic architecture of the deck.\nThe meaning of numbers.\nThe elemental quality of the suits.\nThe archetypal flow of the Major Arcana.\nThe Celtic Cross and the Trinity tarot spreads. \n\nDrawing on more than 25 years of tarot reading\, Joaquin will share the system and philosophy he uses in his own practice\, and participants will spend time delving into the imagery itself—learning to read visually and intuitively rather than relying only on memorized meanings.  \nParticipants will: \n\nDevelop a personal relationship with tarot imagery.\nExplore archetypes\, symbols\, and visual storytelling.\nPractice intuitive and interpretive reading techniques.\nUse tarot as a tool for creative process and artistic inquiry.\n\nNo prior experience with tarot is required! Come with curiosity and leave with new ways of seeing—both your art and yourself. \nFor participations who complete registration: You’ll hear from Joaquin about 1 week before the class begins with reading materials\, reminders and more. In the meantime if any questions arise\, please reach out to info@newrooms.org \n  \n“This class helped me understand a tool that I always wanted to learn but found complicated; taking it made it make sense and practice new ways to perceive the world\, myself\, and others.” \n—Carolina Castañeda del Rio\, Founder and President of Evolve International \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Jeff Beers: Paper & Raincoat
DESCRIPTION:New Room Studios is proud to present this Portland debut show by the Genius Artist Fellow and matter painter Jeff Beers. \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday\, November 12\, 5-8 pm\nGALLERY HOURS: Thursdays and Fridays\, 5-8 pm\, and Saturdays\, 12-8 pm\nON VIEW: November 12-21 (open Thu-Sat) \nHOSTED BY: The Salmonberry Trail Foundation\n233 SW Naito #100\, Portland \n  \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION: \n“Paper & Raincoat” are the two main ingredients of a new series that unfolds like a myth cycle of life and death. Beers painstakingly made it out of scraps of thin sheets of paper that he’s aged for 30 years\, and surplus raincoat material from Columbia Sportswear. (Beers got the latter from the local nonprofit SCRAP Creative Reuse.) After 16 months of meticulous work\, these two simple ingredients have found cosmic depths in this series of 8 pieces. \nThe show also includes a series of Beers’ earlier\, more earthy and elemental works. These pieces use tars\, paints\, emulsions and waxes to explore simultaneously the microcosms and macrocosms of the materials. \nRarely able to afford art supplies\, Beers learned at an early age how to make his own. He still makes his own paints and emulsions\, and his subject matter is often the materials that he’s foraged from the built environment and from the natural environment. He works with the materials until he learns their languages and how they want to see\, and much of his art is in the discipline of letting them speak through him. \nBeers was awarded a 2025-2026 Genius Artist Fellowship by New Room Studios. This program recognizes and supports artists who have a history of making excellent work over the years\, despite significant barriers. As part of his Fellowship\, New Room Studios is producing this show. \nThis show is hosted by The Salmonberry Trail Foundation\, which is dedicated to building an 82-mile trail for hiking and biking from Banks to the Oregon Coast. “Jeff Beers: Paper & Raincoat” will take over their spacious and historic office in downtown Portland in November. \n  \n\n  \n \nClick here to see a new 7-minute film by Adolfo Cantú Villareal about Beers and his new series of work\, or watch above. \n  \n\n  \n \nJeff Beers\, NRS Genius Artists and Matter Painter \n  \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday\, November 12\, 5-8 pm\nGALLERY HOURS: Thursdays and Fridays\, 5-8 pm\, and Saturdays\, 12-8 pm\nON VIEW: November 12-21 (open Thu-Sat) \nHOSTED BY: The Salmonberry Trail Foundation\n233 SW Naito Pkwy #100\, Portland\, OR 97204
